YOUTH SCHOLARSHIPS!

The Brooks Rotary Club was proud to present three local students with a Scholarship valued at $1000 each.
Each year the Club invites area students to apply for the Rotary Service Award to support their post-secondary education. Successful applicants are chosen based on the quality of their contributions to their school and community and in assisting those in need.
Aislyn McDonald was chosen on the basis of her work in her school as a member of the school student council where she organized food drives in support of the food bank and clothing drives in support of the Champions Center In the community she worked with hundreds of kids through her work with the City’s “Learn to Skate” program. Aislyn was named the 2020 Junior Citizen of the Year in Brooks. She is currently attending the University of Alberta working toward a B. Sc in Engineering.
Alonso Tapia Ruiz was chosen on the basis of his work in fighting hunger both locally and internationally. Alonso started a clothing company called 1M (One Meal) where proceeds from the company are used to purchase meals for those in need. To date, his company has donated over 6700 meals to hungry children around the world. Alonso is Currently attending the University of Alberta and is also working toward a B. Sc in Engineering.
Rebecca Nielsen was chosen for her extensive volunteer work in both her school and in her community. In addition to working on the Student Council raising money for various causes, she also spent time volunteering at ABLE (Adult Basic Literacy Education) helping students them become more fluent in English. Rebecca is currently attending the University of Alberta – Augustana in the combined B. Sc and B. Ed program majoring in Chemistry.
